The maintenance of drainage structures is fairly important hence the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways has started works in various drainage schemes across the Western Division.

Flood gates and flap gates maintenance is carried out effectively to prevent flooding during heavy rains. These flood gates and flap gates play a critical role in controlling the flow of water and protecting surrounding areas from potential damage.

By keeping them in good condition, the Ministry is helping to mitigate the risks associated with natural disasters and ensure the safety of local communities. Regular inspections and repairs are key to maintaining the efficiency of these systems and ensuring they operate as intended when needed most.

Continuing his visit today in the Western Division, Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Vatimi Rayalu saw first-hand the various works that have been implemented so far by the Western Division Drainage Board and the Waterways Division.

Progress has been steady with works addressing critical drainage issues in the scheme drains as well as the maintenance of outfall structures.

To date the completed drainage schemes are:

Maro, Sigatoka- total length desilted: 2564 linear metres which will directly benefit 50 households and 25 farmers.

Lomawai, Sigatoka- total length desilted: 16,207.5 linear metres directly benefiting 30 farmers.

Navatu, Ba- total length desilted: 7,615.4 linear metres directly benefitting 24 farmers

Raviravi, Ba- total length desilted: 2,784.1 linear metres benefitting 10 farmers.

There are ongoing maintenance works to damaged flood and flap gates in Lovu, Drasa, Sarava, Maqalevu, Lomolomo and Penang schemes.
